I would love to conduct ghost hunts in the Bedfordshire area in hotels, pubs, cinemas, private residents, boat yards etc. Does anyone know of anywhere that is haunted. I never write anything down in my book unless i have experienced it for myself and have the express permission from the owner. Please help.

Preferably fiction and not mini stories, more like One book:One story.

I recently read a terrific book but I think it's considered nonfiction not fiction. It's called The Bell Witch. It's based on a true story and was eventually made into a movie called An American Haunting. I never saw the movie. But the book is great. It's based on the diary of a witness to the supernatural accounts and who had "inside knowledge" of what was going on. It's written in "story" format, not like a normal documentary that's usually dry and boring — so it's interesting, fast paced and keeps your attention. And it's creepy as anything. You should give it a try. If you like stories about hauntings, you'll like it I'm sure.

**ADD**
Apparently there are several books on the Bell Witch which I didn't realize at first. The author/editor of the book I read, "The Bell Witch," is Brent Monahan.

There are many documented cases of the supernatural – and especially hauntings, being possessed, and other paranormal activity have been reported over the years.

What are some of the most storied hauntings – religious ones are especially interesting.

The Quarantine Station on North Head in Sydney, NSW, Australia has experienced sightings and stories of the supernatural (ghosts particularly) for over a century. See http://www.castleofspirits.com/quarantine.html for a full overview of the Quarantine Station and its history.

I am a paranormal investigator and I believe in ghosts and hauntings (which isn’t a requirement to be a paranormal investigator). But I don’t necessarily believe that ghosts are souls trapped on earth. The idea just sounds illogical to me. We’ve always been taught that anything that exists on earth (or even in this universe) theoretically has to follow the rules of physics.

With that said, I am not going to rule out the possibility that ghosts are the souls of the deceased. I’m not even going to begin to pretend that I know what ghosts are – no one does. Theories abound, but proof is lacking.

Many scientists or other paranormal investigators have offered opinions on how physics and quantum physics can explain ghosts and hauntings. The problem is that no one theory explains every type of ghost and haunting.

So I guess what I’m getting to is… What do you think? All opinions are welcome.
I think I need to expand upon my question.

First off, the better question may have been:

Can science (i.e. physics, medicine, psychology) give a rational explanation for the experiences people attribute to ghosts and hauntings?

There are of course the usual things… tree branch banging on the window, mice in the walls, raccoons in the attic, etc.

I’m not saying that every case of a ghost or haunting will have a rational explanation. And even in those circumstances we can only state that we can find no explanation for the events experienced.
owenmurdoch and gandalf – excellent responses!! I like the way you both think :)
It seems obvious to me that a paranormal investigation group would first rule out any and all natural causes before exploring the possibility that the events are paranormal. Our philosophy is to try to prove the events are not paranormal before we explore the possibility that they are paranormal.

I’m sorry if I didn’t make this clear in my question and follow-up statement.

Because I want to know what the Yahoo! answers community thinks of science’s role in paranormal investigation, I’m going to put this question to vote.

What do you think?

******Can science (i.e. physics, medicine, psychology) give a rational explanation for the experiences people attribute to ghosts and hauntings?*****

Personally, I think yes, it can.

Given enough imagination, you can explain almost anything with a sufficiently large dataset to draw on: see Slutzsky’s Theorem and think about it in terms of things outside time series analysis…

Having said THAT, the theory has been advanced that these sightings actually could fall into numerous types of categories; some are quite probably purely psychological phenomona, others are probably illusions or misperceptions; some may well be a cockeyed chain of events that are (individually) quite mundane but which are bizarre as a chain–field effects and the like.

What I have heard suggested by serious, rather free-thinking but otherwise hard-nosed physicists is that there may be the temporal equivalent of a wormhole: something that will transmit light across large spans of time, but little else, other than (perhaps) other fields and possibly pressure waves (=sound). Do I buy that? No–nor do I reject it out of hand, either. HOWEVER, it is interesting to note that spectral appearances are invariably from the past, and often from the distant (but not too distant) past. We’re talking years to a few centuries, rarely if ever millenia, and I’ve never heard of a ghost CroMagnon or Astralopithicus or even Homo erectus or whatever. This suggests that there is a distancing issue–you can only jump so far forward, so to speak, or the perception can only be so long delayed.

This thought is potentially one that is experimentally testable, actually–or at least potentially so. Consider this thought: if there is something equivalent to a wormhole or quantum tunneling through time, it is reasonable to assume that the larger the distance in time “traveled” the more blurred the image is likely to be. THUS, you can set up a “grid” of observations that allow you to rate how “clear” an apparation is–things like number of facial features clearly present, whether clothing is present, whether audible and discrete phonemes are heard in any sound made (you might want to go for just consonants; they’s likely be disappearing before vowels, and that gets you past most barriers caused by languages differing); and you can set up some sort of tool (how, I don’t know) to allow you to rate the probable age of the appearance. That would probably need some sort of something to identify the period of the spectre–like period clothing, perhaps, which would require a fairly clear apparition, or the legend of who the spectre is supposed to be, and from when–but I leave that detail to you, because you’ve probably more data to sift and can find more in terms of datable stuff than I can dredge up out of my ol’ brain.

The null hypothesis: there is no relationship between clarity of apparition and putative age of its source.

Active hypothesis: the older the putative age of an apparition’s source, the less distinct it is likely to be.

Just remember: don’t expect a single explanation to handle it all, because the odds are that there are multiple phenomona all being lumped together as “ghosts” or “hauntings”…

I hear people say that after using Ouija boards things fly off shelves or they have a ghost and things move on their own and some paranormal teams claim to have documented such, but if these things really do happen, it seems it would be more logical to have your local news channel to document it.

actually, although I have no specific references offhand, I can think of two cases where the local news did document such things. Of course they turned out to be hoaxes, but I guess that could be expected.

I have seen other shows and they get ridiculous with screaming and or playing spooky music. I just feel like TAPS has ruined me for watching any shows about the paranormal activity.

Yes, I think TAPS set the standard. Paranormal State is also pretty good; they make good use of their equipment and I’ve never seen them freaked out and running away. I saw an interesting show last night on the Travel Channel called Ghost Adventures. They actually get padlocked in a place to do their investigations – kinda cool. The one guy did freak and run around, but the leader kept him in check.

Into The Darkness and After Dark Paranormal Research have teamed up to bring you a new and exciting Paranormal TV Show. Hauntings, UFOs, and Cryptozoology will be on the menu.

Christine, who is our Psychic, will give us a look into the other side, while we try to debunk or capture any paranormal activity. You will be witness to our findings, and we will let you decide based on any evidence we may collect. We welcome your feedback or comments on any of the investigations.

You will witness reenactments of actual events that have taken place in an area, along with witness accounts when available. You will also witness the actual investigation and the findings.

If you know of any hauntings in the San Antonio area that you would like for us to investigate and possibly put on Cable TV, let us know.

We hope you enjoy the intro video which was made possible by “Into The Darkness.”

Jose Policarpo Rodriguez’s graveThere is a small chapel in Bandera County just outside of San Antonio called Polly’s Chapel. Jose Policarpo Rodriguez built the chapel in 1882 on the banks of Privilege Creek. Rodriguez, who was known as “Polly” was born in Mexico and came to Texas as a child. He went on to become famous as a scout for the U.S. Army, a guide, a hunter and finally a minister which is what led him to build the church. Polly is buried in an old [tag-tec]graveyard[/tag-tec] just a short distance from the chapel.

A couple of members of our team had done a preliminary investigation of Polly’s Chapel upon hearing of some possible [tag-tec]paranormal activity[/tag-tec]. We decided that a full investigation would be worthwhile based on some stories about possible [tag-tec]hauntings[/tag-tec] taking place there.

The investigation at Polly’s Chapel took place on a cold damp night. Eddie, Josh, Cari and Jay along with all of our electronic equipment piled into our 4X4 for a 45 minute drive to Bandera outside San Antonio.

We arrived at the Chapel around 10:45pm, exited the truck and immediately felt the chill of the country air. It was noticeably colder away from the city and the damp cold air, pierced right though our jackets.

Ignoring the cold, the team quickly gathered all their equipment and entered the chapel to set up our investigation.

Our preliminary investigation at Polly’s Chapel revealed a great deal of activity taking place. In fact, the amount of paranormal activity we encountered made it almost impossible to film. We were really hoping that we had the same amount of activity while we had all our equipment with us.

A quick check of the chapel did not reveal anything out of the ordinary. Video cameras and digital recorders were set in place to capture any paranormal activity which may occur while team members worked on EVP sessions.

The lights were then turned off and the IR lights were activated on the video recorders. Josh, who is the ADPR Video Tech, proceeded to film the [tag-tec]EVP[/tag-tec] session which was being held by Cari, Eddie, and Jay.

While filming the EVP session, a strange red glow was seen on the far side of the chapel window. It appeared to be pretty faint and slowly moved across the window, then on to the wall. At first, seeing this made investigators think it was just the IR from the video camera Josh was using, but after seeing it several different times, we noticed that Josh did not have the camera facing the window and the IR was not reflecting from the IR source on the video camera.

Josh was asked to repeat his actions several different times and the team was unable to get any results. Josh even faced the camera towards the window in order to see if the glow was the same. It was obvious at that point that the red glow was not that of the IR light. We were unable to debunk the small red glow, so we continued with the EVP session and did not see the red glow again.

Next, the team packed up the equipment and proceeded to the Cemetery where Polly himself is buried. Being outside really made for a cold investigation. It was pretty quiet, except for some dogs barking in the distance. The area felt really calm and Jay even stated that he was more comfortable in the Cemetery than in the Chapel.

We worked on EVPs at the location and filmed the area with IR Video Cameras. After staying in the cold until we could no longer feel our fingers or hands, we decided to call it a night and head back home.

Over the following week, team members analyzed all the recordings, but did not find anything unusual. Not a single EVP was found. We were all disappointed with the results of the EVPs that were taken. Next we turned to Josh, who had analyzed the video. Nothing…..the video did not reveal anything out of the ordinary. Cari, who was checking her recordings and her photos, also did not come up with anything. It was finally down to Jay. I received an email from him and BINGO….we had something on film.

Jay sent me a photo he took which contained what appears to be a shadowy figure. The photo clearly shows a dark shadow next to the podium that we could not explain. Although we can not say for sure where we were all standing at the time the photo was taken, none of us were in the photo itself and could not have been casting a shadow in that area.

Although we concluded that there was no hard evidence of a haunting occurring here, our first video may still indicate otherwise. Please take a lo0k and let us know what you think.

Is Your House Haunted?

by admin on 6:37 am

Haunted HouseMany people ask us how they can tell if their house is haunted.

Here are some things you may be encountering that may suggest you are experiencing a true haunting: unexplained noises (footsteps, knocks, banging, rapping, scratching noises, sounds like something being dropped), doors and cabinets opening and closing.

You may note lights turning off and on, items disappearing and reappearing later possibly in the same spot you remembered, unexplained sighted shadows (sighting of fleeting dark and black shadows and shapes seen out of the corner of the eye moving at fast speeds), strange animal behavior like something else is there, a feeling of being watched by some unseen presence.

More extensive and confirmed [tag-tec]haunting[/tag-tec] experiences you might have would include: feelings of being touched by an invisible entity or force, actually seeing a door open or close by itself, actually seeing a light turn off or on several times by itself, hearing cries or whispers of a person, hearing voices or hearing your name being called. Other [tag-tec]paranormal[/tag-tec] experiences include feeling very cold or hot spots, extreme unexplained smells (distinct fragrance of perfume or cologne, cigar or cigarette odors, and very foul rotting or repulsive odors).

Sometimes people notice moving or levitating objects. In some cases an actual physical assault may occur, other physical evidence like writing on walls, handprints, and footprints.

Some people have visual confirmations of actual [tag-tec]apparitions[/tag-tec] (an actual sighted physical manifestation of a ghost/spirit/person or entity in full or partial form) that occur which disappear after being sighted.

There are of course some rational explanations for some of these occurrences. But if you have tried to rule out everything yourself and you still feel you have a true haunting taking place and you would like some questions answered to confirm this, then please contact us or another reputable organization of professional and reputable investigators.

When we perform an investigation, our duty is to document, confirm, and provide to you the possible evidence that a haunting event may be taking place. We may be able to offer you professional advice and help on what you can do in the event we confirm that your home, business, or property may be haunted.

We consider ourselves to be professional paranormal investigators, and we do take our work seriously.

We only conduct the necessary paranormal research to provide the scientific and psychic evidence to you that your home may be haunted or have paranormal events going on there. We do not force our own opinions on anyone. We allow you to draw your own conclusions to anything we show or discuss with you. We only present the evidence to you as to what we find and see.

Our main objective it to objectively investigate the situation and provide enough information to help you decide. We use our own electrical monitoring instruments and other paranormal research equipment to conduct all of our research. We also are very discreet in how we do our research in your home. We value your privacy and maintain complete confidentiality.
